Sliding sash windows

types of sliding sash windows

There are two types of sliding sashes, spring balanced and traditional weighted. What are the differences…?

The main difference between the two is the box (frame) width. Traditional box sashes that use weights are commonly fitted internally behind stone pillars/quoins as the width of the box is hidden in the wall allowing for more light to enter your home.

Since spring balancers operate off springs this can half the width of the box, meaning a window that has been fitted from the outside can have a reduced sight line in comparison to a weighted box once again allowing more light in,

This isn’t always the case but is one of the primary reasons

Materials

Like our doors we offer an Accoya option for less maintenance and a 50year guarantee, however we also offer an additional hardwood option.

The reason we still offer hard wood windows is due to the smaller section size of components, which we believe over the course of a year has less effect on the swelling and shrinking of the timber. This offers a reduction in the cost over the Accoya however loses some benefits such as more maintenance over the coming years and no timber guarantee.

Hardware

All of our sliding sash hardware is brass making it suitable for Accoya or Hardwood. Our standard range of hardware is also included in the cost so there are no hidden costs. All the fixtures in the manufacturer are stainless steel to ensure longevity no matter which timber you choose.

With all of our traditional box sashes we make “easy access pockets” this means if a cord become damage it is a much simpler task to get to the weight and re-hang the sash

Security

Security over the years has improved with sliding sashes though hardware and design. Our design stops the ability to open the fitch faster from the outside with a rebated meeting rails. The hardware that is a party to this are restrictors that prevent the window opening more that 100mm, this stops people from getting in or little ones getting out.
